Actually, surprisingly, you may be wrong.
I've just installed catalyst 11.9 and got exactly the same results as Gareth.
Now, interesting things from xorg log:

[ 34.119] (II) LoadModule: "fglrx"
[ 35.592] (II) UnloadModule: "intel"
[ 35.593] (II) Unloading intel
[ 35.699] (II) Loading sub module "fb"
[ 35.699] (II) LoadModule: "fb"
[ 36.434] (II) fglrx(0): [DRI2] Setup complete
[ 36.434] (II) fglrx(0): [DRI2] DRI driver: i965
[ 36.434] (II) fglrx(0): Allocated new frame buffer 1408x768 stride
5632, tiled
[ 36.281] (II) fglrx(0): Adapter AMD Radeon 6600M and 6700M Series
has 6 configurable heads and 0 displays connected.
[ 36.546] (II) fglrx(0): FBADPhys: 0xf00000000 FBMappedSize: 0x00420000
[ 36.546] (II) fglrx(0): Intel display surface mc addr for AMD: 8fce0000

And then at each VT switch:
[ 43.019] (II) AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch
[ 43.019] (II) fglrx(0): Backup framebuffer data.
[ 43.020] (II) fglrx(0): Backup complete.
[ 47.784] (II) AIGLX: Resuming AIGLX clients after VT switch
[ 47.784] (EE) fglrx(0): Couldn't create pixmap for fbcon
[ 47.841] (II) fglrx(0): Intel display surface mc addr for AMD: 8fce0000
[    47.956] (II) fglrx(0): UVD feature is enabled(II) fglrx(0):
[ 47.958] (II) fglrx(0): Keep CrossFire as disabled in DC power State

I could easily interact with desktop by forcing screen updates with VT-switch.

Selected lines from glxinfo:
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: ATI
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon 6600M and 6700M Series
OpenGL version string: 4.1.11079 Compatibility Profile Context

glxgears also worked (no screen updates though)

This looks to me like ati's really working on supporting our cards.

btw.
1. After logging out, for about 1 second I could see screen (gdm)
animated (updated) properly. Then it hanged.
2. I've got similar results on catalyst 11.6 (or 7) in August, but got
lots of kernel oopses and screen got updated only rarely. Also, my
card was not detected by aticonfig at that time, so some hacks were
needed. No hacks needed now.
