using each graphic chip for different screen with optimus

I have a dell XPS L502 optimus enabled laptop with Ubuntu 11.10
out of the box I get the internal screen&mini display port working
correctly with the integrated intel graphics controller
and the hdmi port (presumably hardwired to the discrete nVidia) doesn't
work.

I was thinking could I ignore the fancy optimus capabilities and use the
nVidia to power my external monitor via hdmi
and get all the hardware accelerations on that screen, while using the
integrated chip for the laptops internal monitor.

I figure I don't really need to send data from discreet GPU to any screen.

does this make sense, is it possible, has anyone done this, how do I go
about doing this?
