Re: HDMI is unreliable with nvidia optimus on asus n53sv

Hi,

I have the following packages installed:
xorg 1:7.6+4ubuntu3.2
nvidia-current 280.04-0~nattyubuntu4
kernel 2.6.38.13.28
ironhide 1.0-1~nattyubuntu40

This may be a bit outdated, because I didn't have time to upgrade to a newer distro, but it works - maybe later versions introduced a regression? I will check this myself soon. There is no need to change distribution. Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu - my version actually uses Ubuntu Natty as a package base. Everything works great when the HDMI is plugged in before booting the system. After your post I have attempted to remove and plug in again the HDMI cable several times while the system was running - and indeed sometimes I have ended up in a situation where I would only see a black screen and had to hit the power button.

glxgears performance for reference, intel is v-synced, so no performance comparison between intel and nvidia :-(

eiver@eiver-N53SV ~ $ glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.990 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.001 FPS

eiver@eiver-N53SV ~ $ optirun glxgears
* Starting Ironhide X server ironhide DON Enabling nVidia card succeeded.
. [ OK ]
2428 frames in 5.0 seconds = 485.467 FPS
2153 frames in 5.0 seconds = 430.568 FPS
2204 frames in 5.0 seconds = 440.681 FPS
2316 frames in 5.0 seconds = 463.059 FPS
2196 frames in 5.0 seconds = 439.084 FPS
* Stopping Ironhide X server ironhide _OFF Disabling nVidia card succeeded.
[ OK ]

Hi,

I'm not sure that the best solution is the complete change in distribution,
when the problem is more likely to be in a low level software component.
However it is extremely interesting that you have software that works.
(Even windows only offers me the VGA port when I attempt to set dual monitors.
However I am no windows guru.)

I wonder if you would be able to tell me what version of the intel xorg graphics driver
you are using.
The latest drivers would appear to originate at
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-intel/
and the last tagged release there is 2.19.0, and the ubuntu package I have installed is
2:2.19.0-0ubuntu~xup1, for xserver-xorg-video-intel. So I assume they correspond.

I would assume that the nvidia graphics comes in at a higher level and that the intel graphics
handles the piping to HDMI, LVDS, VGA etc. So bumblebee or ironhide possibly wouldnt matter.

Thanks for replying,
Peter Garrone

Hi,

Obviously I have no single best solution for you, but I can tell you
what my experience is with my n53sv. I used Linux Mint with IronHide
connected to a LGTV via HDMI and I never had any display issues. I
did have some issues with sound over HDMI, but that is another
story. I also connected the laptop to 2 projectors (one via HDMI,
the other via VGA) and that too worked together with Compiz. That
was about half a year ago. Soon I will try it with the latest LMDE
and will post any necessary workarounds to make it work (should any
be needed, and if I manage to find them :-P).

Hi,

If a HDMI display is plugged in, it can work, but mostly does not.
If a sony monitor is plugged in immediately after the grub menu, then the monitor displays either on boot
or after a disconnect/reconnect/redisplay cycle.
A panasonic plasma TV did work, once, but now does not.

HDMI displays are always detected by the software, either xrandr or settings/displays, when activated, with correct resolutions
in displays.

Any ideas on this welcome,
