Dave Airlie is working hard on prime support for Xorg through Xrandr. 

He just posted two videos about gpu offloading (like optimus, using nouveau driver) and usb hotplug support :

This can be seen as another message to Nvidia like the one of Linus ...
It's really promising. I hope that this will soon reach X.org mainstream.
