rew gave more information on the question:
I straced new 0.3.0 while doing a download and a purge on my laptop, and
it seems to have worked. Either the strace or the upgrade to 0.3.0 has
helped...

Not yet sure if I've gotten rid of the "stops logging before its full
problem".
