Absolutely right.  Python is one of those things that you never want to muck with.  For that reason it is a side-by-side parallel install.  Additionally, python26 was accepted into EPEL 5 and has been EOL'd from IUS.  Though, because IUS relies on EPEL its all the same if you're subscribed to both:

$ sudo yum install python26


You can then access it as:

$ /usr/bin/python2.6
