can't associate with access point on ExoPC with IVI Remix

I have this apparently well-known problem trying to bring up the network:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=209673

wpa_gui and wpa_cli say over and over again:

Associated with 00:0f:66:d3:14:5a
CTRL-EVENT-CONNECTED - Connection to 00:0f:66:d3:14:5a completed (reauth)
[id=0
id_str=]
CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED bssid=00:00:00:00:00:00 reason=3

Per S. Burmeister at https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=209673,

reason 3 seems to be:

 /* Device is now unmanaged */
NM_DEVICE_STATE_REASON_NOW_UNMANAGED = 3,

Now IVI Remix is running connmand with Atheros 9K. Do I need to change
bootargs or kernel config perhaps? WiFi was working fine with the same
access point with meego-ivi and connman and kernel 2.6.38-pinetrail.
Other wireless devices are stably associated right now. Is the Pinetrail
kernel configuration perhaps different than the Ubuntu IVI Remix one?
Thanks for any pointers.
