[Bug 1060029] Re: Wired trackball fails while on battery power (module unload issue?)

cefn, as per
http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/19/Product/inspiron-
15r-n5110 an update is available for your BIOS (A11). If you update to
this, does it change anything?

If not, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Thank you for your understanding.

Title:
Wired trackball fails while on battery power (module unload issue?)

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I have a wired trackball which identifies itself through lsusb as...

Bus 003 Device 013: ID 047d:1022 Kensington Orbit Optical

This device is perfectly functional when my Dell Q15R (N5110) is
powered from the mains, but when running on battery, the device lasts
something like 10 seconds before being disabled.

Unplugging and replugging the trackball gets you another 10 seconds.
Keeping moving the pointer can sustain the function of the trackball,
until you leave the pointer still for 10 seconds, and then it's
  disabled.

Plugging the mains back in and replugging the trackball means the
  trackball keeps functioning indefinitely.

I don't know what kind of power module unload is built in to 12.04. Is
it possible that something is being unloaded which shouldn't be? Any
suggestions for workarounds? I'd really like to be able to use my
  trackball when running on battery.
