[Bug 1060029] Re: Wired trackball fails while on battery power (module unload issue?)
I'm pretty sure I was running the latest BIOS (I recall lots of hassle
getting FreeDOS as a boot environment to install the windows-only
package - I don't have windows on this machine). However, there's good
news, my current configuration (Ubuntu Gnome 13.10 Saucy) with
repository updates of the kernel and Xorg-edgers doesn't seem to have
the problem.
For reference for pointing devices on this model, there is a separate
issue with the trackpad (built-in) when on battery power which remains,
but I'm suspicious that's to do with it not working when it isn't
properly grounded (e.g. an electronics/physics issue, not a kernel
module).

Title:
Wired trackball fails while on battery power (module unload issue?)
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
I have a wired trackball which identifies itself through lsusb as...
Bus 003 Device 013: ID 047d:1022 Kensington Orbit Optical
This device is perfectly functional when my Dell Q15R (N5110) is
powered from the mains, but when running on battery, the device lasts
something like 10 seconds before being disabled.
Unplugging and replugging the trackball gets you another 10 seconds.
Keeping moving the pointer can sustain the function of the trackball,
until you leave the pointer still for 10 seconds, and then it's
disabled.
Plugging the mains back in and replugging the trackball means the
trackball keeps functioning indefinitely.
I don't know what kind of power module unload is built in to 12.04. Is
it possible that something is being unloaded which shouldn't be? Any
suggestions for workarounds? I'd really like to be able to use my
trackball when running on battery.
