Re: [Bug 1096989] Re: 10ec:8179 No wireless support for Lenovo IdeaCentre Q190 (RTL8188E)
Hello,
I would *recommend installing saucy.
Concerning raring, *I think that the crucial test would be if someone will
do a test
if the wifi device could be found, after a package update on raring with,
aftera manually install the kernel v3.10 and assure that
the file /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8188efw.bin exists.
**Concerning quantal or precise,
Even if you will install the latest kernel, and install manually the
rtl8188efw.bin file the device won't be listed.
**-----------------------------------
I have manually downloaded and installed the packages from this site
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
I can confirm the functionality of RTL8188EE since the kernel 3.10 released
on 30-Jun-2013
on http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline
It still works with the newer kernels, I have tested `till v3.11-rc5-saucy.
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.11-rc5-saucy/
RTL8188EE was ment to be added in the linux kernel whith the version 3.10
stable
It did not work in the prior versions like
[DIR] v3.10-rc1-saucy/ 13-May-2013 09:27 -
[DIR] v3.10-rc2-saucy/ 20-May-2013 22:52 -
[DIR] v3.10-rc3-saucy/ 26-May-2013 23:51 -
[DIR] v3.10-rc4-saucy/ 02-Jun-2013 08:59 -
[DIR] v3.10-rc5-saucy/ 09-Jun-2013 01:52 -
[DIR] v3.10-rc6-saucy/ 15-Jun-2013 22:51 -
[DIR] v3.10-rc7-saucy/ 22-Jun-2013 21:51 -
The following kernels were tested and I can confirm that RTL8188EE is
functional:
-
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.10
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.10.1
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.10.2
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.10.3
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.10.4
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.10.5
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.10.6
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc1
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc2
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc3
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc4
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc5
I have tested the steps below:
None of those worked.
I've tried to:
- - install the Realtek driver for the RTL8188CE (seemed close enough...)
- - install the driver from
https://github.com/tianon/linux-rtlwifi-8188ce
- - install linux-backports-modules-cw
- - upgrade to kernel 3.7
+ - install the Realtek driver for the RTL8188CE (seemed close enough...)

(None of those worked)
Which is normal, the changes could be seen in the related email lists - the
rtl8188ee topic, for example
http://www.spinics.net/lists/netdev/msg227415.html
The file rtl8188efw.bin could be found linux-firmware package for Ubuntu
13.04 or newer, I did a search by clicking on
[list of files] @ http://packages.ubuntu.com/saucy/linux-firmware web page.
----------------
The results, where the wlan RTL8188EE works fine:

Title:
10ec:8179 No wireless support for Lenovo IdeaCentre Q190 (RTL8188E)
Status in HWE Next Project:
New
Status in The Linux Kernel:
New
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
I'm on 12.10. The wifi adapter doesn't seem to be recognized at all:
doesn't show up in NetworkManager, no adapter listed by iwconfig. The
wifi card seems to be a RTL8188E (lspci -nn tells me it's 10ec:8179).
I've tried to:
- install the Realtek driver for the RTL8188CE (seemed close enough...)
- install the driver from https://github.com/tianon/linux-rtlwifi-8188ce
- install linux-backports-modules-cw
- upgrade to kernel 3.7
None of those worked.
