[Bug 657034] Re: upgrade to Maverick only partially successfull

Joe, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

Title:
upgrade to Maverick only partially successfull

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
In upgrading to Maverick using "update-manager -d", I encountered a
serious problem. This occurred twice. Towards the end of the
installation, I receiuved the following warning: "Could not install
'linux-image-2.6.35-22 generic'. The upgrade will continue but the
'linux-image-2.6.35-22 generic' package may not be in working mode".
Well, it apprears it ws not. When I rebooted, grub drop into "grub-
rescue" mode. I reinstalled Lucid from a backup, and retried the
upgrade again. The same exact symptoms occurred. After the second
upgrade failure, I booted from a Live CD and re-insalled grub. This
seemed to clear the immediate boot problem. On the first upgrade
attempt, I saved a screen shot of the terminal output. It read:
Traceback (most recent call last): File
  "/usr/share/apport/package.hook", line 59, in <module>
  pr.write(open(apport.fileutils.make.report_path(pr), 'w')) IOError:
(Errno 2) No such file or directory:
  '/var/crash/linux.image-2.6.35-22generic.0.crash' . I assume that this
error was the result of the unsuccessful upgrade to the new kernel. I
thought this was worth reporting since it happened twice in a row.
