Vivid is now based on the v3.18.2 upstream stable kernel, but we'll be rebasing to v3.18.3 shortly.  We'll also be rebsaing our
 unstable branch to v3.19-rc5 and get that uploaded to our team PPA soon.3.18.2 updates and will soon be rebased to 3.19.  

Can you test the latest Vivid kernel and see if this bug is now fixed?

  display driver / video issues in 3.18 (regression from 3.16)

Bug description:
  After upgrading to the 3.18 kernel in vivid (currently with
  initrd.img-3.18.0-8-generic), hangouts are behaving badly for me. I
  suspect this is due to video device performance but that's just a
  guess.

  Things I've noticed:
   * hangouts have horizontal black bars / gitchy video even when just displaying my webcam (before others have joined)
   * mplayer does not show video, but just a black box
     mplayer /usr/share/example-content/Ubuntu_Free_Culture_Showcase/How\ fast.ogg

  This does not happen in 3.16.
