After upgrading to the 3.18 kernel in vivid (currently with
initrd.img-3.18.0-8-generic), hangouts are behaving badly for me. I
suspect this is due to video device performance but that's just a guess.

Things I've noticed:
 * hangouts have horizontal black bars / gitchy video even when just displaying my webcam (before others have joined)
 * mplayer does not show video, but just a black box
   mplayer /usr/share/example-content/Ubuntu_Free_Culture_Showcase/How\ fast.ogg

This does not happen in 3.16.
Specifically, I see this in:
  linux-image-3.16.0-28-generic: /boot/vmlinuz-3.16.0-28-generic
but not in
  linux-image-3.18.0-8-generic: /boot/vmlinuz-3.18.0-8-generic
