Title:
Ubuntu 13.04 freezes when copying large amount of data from one USB
drive to another
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
When copying about 1.5TB of data from one 3TB USB drive to another the
system totally freezes requiring a hard reset (power button or sysrq-
alt-b
Details:
I have a Lenovo T420 laptop. I am trying to copy data from one USB drive to another but after some time has elapsed (up to 2 hours) the entire system becomes unresponsive. I am usually only running a web browser (happens with both Firefox and Chrome). The mouse cursor is still active for a few minutes but nothing else is responsive. The mouse cursor will then also vanish and trying to change to a terminal (ctrl-alt-F1 for example) is not possible.
The laptop BIOS is up to date.
Things I have done:
- File tranfer was using Nautilius so installed Nemo but same issue.
- I set up a netconsole and monitored remotely. The plug in of the USB drives was detected but nothing else sent to remote console after the hang.
- I can still ping the laptop but cannot ssh into it after the hang
- I can see nothing obvious in syslog or dmesg that gives an indication of what is wrong but I don't really understand most of what is in there anyway.
- I thought initially that it was Firefox so totally removed and just used Chrome. Issue persisted.
- I ran memtest86+ which showed no errors so RAM is not the issue.
- I ran installed cpuburn and ran burnP6. CPU maxed out but no hang. So CPU isnot the issue
- I then thought it may be an issue with my install do i did a fresh install of Ubuntu 13.04, did all updates and tried again. Same result
- I have a HP 6730s laptop so I did a fresh install of 13.04 and tried on it. Same result, hangs after about 20 minuts or so of copying files so the issue is not specific to my Lenovo laptop
- I did the transfer on another laptop I have that is running Windows XP and tranfer is fine. So issue is not with USB drives (unless WIndows masks any issues somehow)
