[Bug 1568865] Re: [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915_bpo]] *ERROR* CPU pipe B FIFO underrun
I am also seeing this, with a fresh install of 16.04 on a new Dell
Precision 5510 (also Skylake, similar to the XPS 15 9550).
When I plug in an external monitor I see this error in syslog:

After this, I have an issue where moving the mouse into the laptop's screen causes the screen to go black (after some brief glitches). In fact, it's enough to move the mouse pointer close to the configured boundary between the external screen and the laptop screen, it doesn't have to go into the other screen.
On moving the mouse out again onto the external screen, the laptop
display comes back again.
I don't see anything in the logs at the exact time this happens, but it
seems to be preceded by the error above, which shows up when plugging in
the external screen. It's somewhat intermittent in that it doesn't
always happen (but usually does).
This is when using the intel drivers. I also get the same "screen goes
black when mouse moves into it" problem when using nouveau, but not with
the nvidia drivers.

Title:
[drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915_bpo]] *ERROR* CPU pipe
B FIFO underrun
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
Running Gnome-Shell on ubuntu 16.04 on my Dell XPS 15 9550 laptop
using Intel graphics (Nvidia card turned off), I get this error in
syslog when plugging in an external monitor (HDMI).
Apr 11 14:28:38 miaco kernel: [ 2616.604641]
[drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915_bpo]] *ERROR* CPU pipe
B FIFO underrun
Meanwhile both screens flash and show corruption. Most of the time
this has caused a hang that needs a hard power off to get out of, but
occasionally removing the external monitor is enough to get going
again and so I've been able to find this message in the logs.
Note that when using Nvidia (proprietary) drivers and Unity DE I do
not have this problem; so it seems to be related to the intel drivers,
or possibly Gnome Shell's use of them.
Happy to help if I can (would like to be able to use external
monitors!)
