Title:
disper -S put the system into unusable and unrecoverable state

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
I use an external monitor connected to my laptop and I use "disper -s" and "disper -S" all the time to switch between built-in and external monitor when I discronnect and reconnect the monitor.
Frequently both of them randomly fail, but without major consequences.

Now this time the following happened when I ran "disper -S" (after
  connecting the external monitor):

  - the built-in monitor switched off
  - the external monitor switched on but it was all black
  - hitting Esc, or Alt+Tab, or random keys, did nothing. No way I could see anything on screen
  - Ctrl+Alt+F1 would NOT shouw up a virtual terminal (it usually does, always on the built-in screen)
  - Unplugging and replugging the monitor did nothing

So I had no choice but to force a power down, with disastrous data
  loss.

Note that, whether or not there is a bug in disper triggering this, the OS has a huge bug if any buggy or even malicious program can under any circumstances make such a thing happen and there's no way to recover.

I don't know whether the responsible is the kernel, xorg, or Unity.
