[Bug 1238969] Re: whose system frozen

No, I can't reproduce it.
But I strongly suspect it's related to the high disk activity, as it's not the first time I experience a whole system hang while doing massive disk operations (i.e. copying tons of files from a disk to another).

Actually I doubt it's a kernel issue, I reported it against linux just
because I have no idea what package is responsible, and I don't know of
a name to use as argument to ubuntu-bug to report the bug generically
about ubuntu.

I can't test the mainline kernel as I can't reproduce the issue at will
in the first place.

Title:
  whose system frozen

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I had two terminal windows open, each one was executing a rsync
command to copy relatively big amounts of data from a disk to another
(they were transferring separate folders so they could not interfere
with each other), and I had Thunderbird and Google Chrome and few
  other applications open.

Suddenly the notebook's fan cooler's speed went down, the two rsyncs stopped progressing, and Thunderbird's window became greyed out and stopped responding.
Then I tried opening a new tab in Google Chrome but it stopped responding too

Then I moved the mouse to the left of the screen and the launcher
showed up, but then the whole system stopped responding to mouse
clicks. The launcher didn't hide when I moved the mouse away and at
this point the whole system was frozen.

It did respond to keyboard and I could hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 to open a virtual terminal.
After entering the user name, the terminal got stuck too and it never prompted me for a password.

The only thing I could do was to force power off.

It looks like the freezing had to do with disk I/O.
