Message #21205
[Bug 1238969] [NEW] whose system frozen
Public bug reported:
I had two terminal windows open, each one was executing a rsync command
to copy relatively big amounts of data from a disk to another (they were
transferring separate folders so they could not interfere with each
other), and I had Thunderbird and Google Chrome and few other
applications open.
Suddenly the notebook's fan cooler's speed went down, the two rsyncs stopped progressing, and Thunderbird's window became greyed out and stopped responding.
Then I tried opening a new tab in Google Chrome but it stopped responding too
Then I moved the mouse to the left of the screen and the launcher showed
up, but then the whole system stopped responding to mouse clicks. The
launcher didn't hide when I moved the mouse away and at this point the
whole system was frozen.
It did respond to keyboard and I could hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 to open a virtual terminal.
After entering the user name, the terminal got stuck too and it never prompted me for a password.
The only thing I could do was to force power off.
It looks like the freezing had to do with disk I/O.
