  "port is slow to respond" error freezes OS for seconds while reading
  HDs

Bug description:
  Sometimes, while reading data from HD, my OS hangs for about 15 seconds (gray window and no feedback).
  The problem started with Gutsy but in Hardy it'is very frequent and makes Ubuntu almost unusable.

  The PC is a notebook Acer Aspire 5630
