Try editing the grub.cfg file directly I know it says not to do this but
I had a problem much like this one with recovery mode. I edited the file
and added 'gfxmode text' under the recordfail entery under the menu
entery header for the operating system that was having the issue. I hope
this helps...

  Boot hang after initrd load

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  The machine hangs immediately after initrd image is loaded with a
  blank aubergin-ish screen.  I can CTRL-ALT-DELETE to reboot only.
  Booting in recovery mode doesn't tell me anything either.  I am able
  to successfully boot into the 3.8.0-11 kernel.
