[Bug 668554] Re: Blank display at startup in Sony Vaio CW series

Gursimran singh, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.12

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

Title:
10de:0a2a [Sony VAIO VPCCW16FG] Blank display at startup

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
In all versions of ubuntu after Karmic, sony vaio CW series, ends up
in a blank display when booted directly. The computer starts perfectly
and the startup tone can be heard in speakers. This is possibly caused
because the driver (nouveau) is not able to read the EDID information
of the display attached to laptop. When I connect external display to
my HDMI port, it works fine. But the laptop's built in display is not
  detected at all.

The primary reason of this problem is that of the EDID data. Even when
I install Nvidia drivers in karmic, the same blank display can be
reproduced. In lucid and maverick, this is due to maverick. However,
the default drivers in case of karmic(NV or neva) happens to make the
  display appear.

In maverick or in lucid, I can boot into the computer using
  'nomodeset' in boot options in
  grub(http://lemoney92.blogspot.com/2010/09/linux-blank-screen-
problem.html). This possibly disables nouveau driver and boots up with
  the default display driver.

Also I can make the Nvidia driver work in karmic and in lucid, by
forcing the driver use the edid exported from windows. This enables
the 3D effects however I'm not able to switch to a VT.

Also the brightness of my display does not change at all. There is a workaround related to nvidia_bl module.

All these problems are linked and possibly the base it that kernel is
not able fetch EDID information from the laptop's display.
