[Bug 1107642] Re: Plymouth partly working on imac 12, 1 with different results on 32bit and 64bit kernel

Hi Chris,

well we want it to be available in precise lts but then in the hardware enablement kernels (quantal, raring, saucy).
As this is the userspace daemon it would be nice to have it in precise using a hardware enablement kernel.

Title:
Plymouth partly working on imac 12,1 with different results on 32bit
  and 64bit kernel

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in “linux” source package in Quantal:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  SRU Justification:

  Impact:
When installing 32-bit images on an imac 12,1 with intel/ati graphics, there may be crashes or blank screens.

  Fix:
bb588820ef421c6098dca1fec29c3b347f1c8c19 fixes the radeon blackout issues; this is already in raring/quantal
9a0f938bde74bf9e50bd75c8de9e38c1787398cd fixes the i915 issues. This is in raring, but not in quantal.

  Testcase:
Update kernel on install iso, and try to install 32-bit ubuntu on imac 12,1.

  Hello,

i have issues with plymouth on a imac 12,1.
When starting a 64bit kernel on the imac i get a console and i can start X.

When starting a 32bit kernel on the imac i don't get a console and i
  cannot start X.

I have been troubleshooting this for a while now and i thought it was
an error in the graphics driver, but that has been ruled out with the
  help of the upstream developers.

I have then removed plymouth from the 32bit initrd (just removed the
scripts) and my console started to work. So then i enabled
plymouth:debug on the kernel cmd on both the 64bit kernel and the
32bit and i was a little surprised to see that the 64bit initrdl tried
to load the i915 driver and failed and the 32bit driver loaded the
radeon driver and succeeded but there my console gets disabled
  somehow.

Attached the debug logs for 64bit and 32bit plymouth debug.

This system has a hybrid graphics setup. It contains a intel graphics card and a discrete radeon GPU (where the monitor is connected to).
