Hello Christopher,
As this 3G modem could work with newer kenel, and the error message you pointed out is a "Firmware Bug",
I don't think this will be BIOS, related.

Bug description:
CID: 201208-11537 Dell Latitude 6430u
There is a SIM card slot on this system, however, there is no such
option for it to connect to 3G network in the Network Manager
But there is one extra non-working Ethernet device in it, "Novatel
Wireless HSPA" [413c:819b]
I guess maybe it's for the 3G modem, but was incorrectly detected.
