Message #54622
[Bug 1306573] [NEW] The kernel seems to fail to cache disk blocks in some cases.
Public bug reported:
I have a server with 16G RAM. When running Ubuntu 10.04, it would cache
my mail directory (with way too many messages: about 20000), and
starting mutt was quick unless the daily backup had been running.
After upgrading to 14.04, I now notice that I have to wait much more
often for the maildir to get cached.
I have a script called "cmd" for "cache-mail-dir".
I had run it just before this, so everything was still cached when I
started this:
abra2:~> time cmd ; time cmd; sleep 120 ; time cmd; time cmd
0.080u 0.084s 0:00.24 66.6% 0+0k 0+0io 0pf+0w
0.072u 0.088s 0:00.23 65.2% 0+0k 0+0io 0pf+0w
0.096u 0.128s 0:30.52 0.6% 0+0k 229768+0io 0pf+0w
0.088u 0.076s 0:00.27 55.5% 0+0k 0+0io 0pf+0w
abra2:~>
The first two commands run in 0.25 seconds. Good. Then, wait for two
minutes, and everything needs to come from teh disk again, taking half a
minute. Run the command again, and you're back to 0.25 seconds....
The server claims to have 13G of memory "free", and this is still the
case after weeks of uptime.
The "reporting guidelines" tell me to run "ubuntu-bug linux" for kernel
bugs, which then tells me that "linux is not an ubuntu package".
