[Bug 1322850] [NEW] package linux-image-3.5.0-49-generic (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

Check if you are using third party repositories. If so disable them, since they are a common source of problems.
Furthermore run the following command in a Terminal: apt-get install -f
