Message #88773
[Bug 1390772] Re: External USB3 drive not detected in Ubuntu 14.10
AndrewS, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. As per http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-g-series-laptops/lenovo-g505s-notebook an update to your BIOS is available (3.00). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.
Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't
have to create a new bug report.
Once the BIOS is updated, then please mark this report Status Confirmed.
Thank you for your understanding.

Title:
External USB3 drive not detected in Ubuntu 14.10
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
I have a Lenovo G505s laptop running dual boot Ubuntu 14.10/Windoes
8.1.
If I boot the laptop into Ubuntu and plug the drive into a USB3 port,
the device shows up in lsusb but is not shown in Dolphin.
If I boot the laptop into Ubuntu and plug the drive into a USB2 port,
the device shows up in lsusb and is shown in Dolphin.
If I boot the laptop into Windows, then Restart and boot into Ubuntu
(i.e. without fully powering down the Laptop) the external drive
appears in Dolphin when plugged into a USB3 port.
Whenever the drive appears in Dolphin I can read from and write to it.
