Is there "OS Selection" option in BIOS in Advanced screen? If so then is
it set to "Windows 7" or "Windows 8"?

I had random lock-ups with my Asus X553MA when this option was set to
"Windows 8".

  ASUS X551MA: Ubuntu 14.04 freezes from time to time

Bug description:
  From time to time without an obvious reason the whole system freezes
  (Ubuntu 14.04 on ASUS X551MA) . A mouse indicator also don't respond.
  Always it was when I was using Internet via Chrome or Firefox or
  Transmission. Of course, maybe it was a mere coincidence.
