support for remote configuration on isolated networks

I'm looking for something that can do remote configuration of LAN-based ubuntu systems that are mostly isolated from the internet.

Ideally the interface of the controller could be separated from the machine that it runs on, perhaps as a client/server.

This could be used for labs that sit behind firewalls for various reasons.

My primary application is in creating a build-your-own-LiveCD website, where the liveCDs are built on a captive machine that only has access to a cache machine and not the full internet.

I realize that your team is working on something a little different, but I think an offline updater can address these areas and with a little thought you could make a much greater impact than with offline updating alone.
