Bryan,

Could you check you wxWidgets version ?
I think Kicad requires wxWidgets-2.6 and it seems this error occurs with 
wxWidgets < 2.6.
For example, with Gentoo, all makefiles must be edited to replace wx-configby 
wx-config-2.6
