According to the wxwidgets documentation, GetCurrentSelection was added 
in version 2.6.2 .
The most recent Debian package has wxwidgets 2.6.1, which does not have 
GetCurrentSelection.

I had to uninstall the Debian packages and compile wxwidgets 2.6.2 from 
source.
