I wonder if a click duration test would allow distinguishing a double 
click from a single click, if the test were performed at the end of the 
first click? Do users click faster when doing a double click?

If so, then the duration of the first click could be used to ignore a 
short single click, with the assumption being that it will eventually 
become a double click.

Its risky, but worth considering.
