I would like to add one additional suggestion as I do not know whether
it was proposed earlier.

The layer shall have locked property - so when is visible user cannot
click on it to edit and broke something accidentally. This would be
similar to layer lock in Photoshop.

So the colour squares may display a small padlock, when they're locked.

Werner's image is very close to my imagination of the feature.
