This very neat feature was indeed missing until now you submitted the
patch/idea.

For me with awesome tiling window manager it works very good, only as Dick said
the patch needs to be cleaned up.

Yes, it should also work cross-platform and doesn't need to depend on
a window manager.

I hope someone can put this feature upstream and finds some time to
cleanup the patch.
