Please see my latest commit, which restores some of the goodness in Vladimir's Rev 3239.

I would appreciate some testing on it, and if you can view the diff.

Rev 3239 was cherry picked, and the changes were made by hand again by me.  (It would have
been easier if 3239 was not so large.)

Unfortunately there is some small co-mingling with work I am doing on makeing m_Orient and
m_Thickness fields private across all objects, an incomplete task, that I had started
first.  Haven't mastered "bzr shelve" yet, but learning it.
