I always wondered why the middle button, since it's awful to do on

That could be maybe done in the future in the opengl view.

Colors are otherwise enumerated (not RGB) for historic reasons and
transparency is not supported (not in the Porter-Duff way, pcbnew works
by OR-ing the colors). In fact the current palette was accurately chosen
and optimized for the oring composition, and for the best highlighting
behaviour.
