Re: update on IGES modeling

Hi Cirilo,

I was thinking that may be an intermediate step in exporting the full board for mechanical purposes could be to add the option to export the plain pcb with bounding boxes of the vrml modules...

that could eliminate the problem related to vrml models and could simplify a lot the mechanical model, maintaining the information for building a mechanical 3D layout ... the bounding box version of 3D modules plus the plain pcb should be enough for mechanical purposes interchanges...

do you think it could be possible to add the option to export bounding boxes beside the plain pcb board with the export IDF menu?
do you think this could be useful?

thank you

Maurice

Hi folks,

The IGES code is now at a stage where a PCB model can be generated with
cutouts and drill holes
and various component models can be placed within the assembly. I will
conduct further tests by
generating PCB assembly files from IDF files before moving on to planning the plugin refactoring in pcbnew, cleaning up the IGES lib in preparation for a possible merge into KiCad, and finally implementing the IGES export.

One thing to consider with the IGES code is whether it is better to
eventually merge it with KiCad or to leave the library as a separate
project in hopes that other people on the web will be interested in
improving the code for other purposes.
