Placing files somewhere in the repositories, cloud computing, etc., is good thing for some people, but be aware of one small thing: a flick of a switch labeled "Power On/Off" can deprive us of our files. More over. Imagine a situation where suddenly the whole worldwide network will fall. What is the result? Humanity goes back in a fraction of a second to the Stone Age!

I am the most against to move everything stored locally related to KiCad to remote repositories. As I remember (and understand), these remote repositories were to be only an one of ways in entire library system, but now you want to drop everything else and keep only server based part.

Thus, I do not like your idea.

To execute such movement, you must clean up the symbol libraries first.
As one of worst examples let will serve PIC microcontrollers libraries. We have now five files. Ok, three I've added, but we have also another two where the symbols are repeated. Want to keep this mess?

By the way, I wanted to let you know that I created my own repository with sorted symbol libraries.

This is my official proposal how KiCad's symbols libraries should look like.

Sort key is simple: the manufacturer and the functional group. Some symbols of few important manufacturers go to the collective libraries. Older symbols (often looks very ugly) are processed to look like those which I drew himself.
