I don't think that that the system I described in my response smells
like polling. The responsiveness of the system I described is much more
consistent than polling-- both have an average delay of 30s, but with
messaging it's *always* 30s, instead of 0-60s with polling. It also
takes better advantage of cumulative updates than polling, making it
more efficient.
