I use the company SMTP and did not get an email from ec2 last night.  This line of reasoning may be fruitful, but is not the only thing wrong.

I just ran with --postmortem.  That worked fine--I got an email.  That's far from conclusive, but at least does not contradict mwh's hypothesis.
