As discussed on the phone earlier, I've updated the API:

  should_use_{default,traditional}_installer()  <-- informational
  use_{default,traditional}_installer()  <-- no-arg setters

I've also added warnings—as documentation, not warnings.warn(...)— to the setter methods.
