The chown and chmod really don't make much sense on a symlink.  Without --dereference, they will affect the referent rather than the link, and the defaults in the package are probably fine anyway.

Here and elsewhere, we could use a context manager nowadays; any builders still on hardy are about to die and aren't going to be upgraded to this.
