Alright, so here's what I'm thinking I need to do before I can get
avatars.catalyst.net.nz to work:

- support for auth plugins
- LDAP auth plugin (to avoid having to create other accounts)
- automatic importer for the catalyst staff directory photos
- automatic cropping of images
- add "domain=example.com" to the gravatar URLs parameters
- delegate from within the Apache rewrite rule
- put libravatar on a public vserver and point libravatar.org there
- support the default ("d=...") parameter in URLs
- write .jpg and .png hardlinks when assigning images
- add SITE_URL and SITE_NAME to settings.py

optionally:

- javascript cropping of images
- django app serving resized (on the fly) images and cache them
