builds failing with gcc 4.5

As Matthias found a few days ago master no longer builds with gcc 4.5 or
older because of an unsupported C++0x (C++11) construct.

If we want to have builds for Ubuntu 11.04 and other non-bleeding edge
distros for the next release that code needs to be made more boring :)
