aside from the increased ugliness, this patch doesn't accomplish much:
according to <http://www.lua.org/manual/5.2/manual.html#3.3.5>, control
variables of for loops are already local to the loop.

note also that Lua is an interpreted language so allocation /
deallocation may not happen when you're expecting it.
