Mileage on this may vary considerably, it seems:

If I boot into my new Lubuntu 10.04 desktop, htop says I'm using 65 MB 

on Ubuntu 10.04, it's 211

To be fair, the Ubuntu system is running som daemons like apache and
ssh, so the comparison is not entirely calibrated.
