Regarding the lack of an install icon:

I booted the Live CD this time choosing to "Install" but it still booted to the Live Desktop. As I browsed about in pcmanfm I found the Lubuntu image and once opened it shows an install icon. I posted a screenshot here:

I didn't try clicking on that yet to begin the installation but I wanted to let you know what I'd found.

Typo alert!  Let's make that

Incidentally, there is an md5sum file for it at
