This might be a general problem between all flavours of ubuntu ppc and yaboot:

Even with the fresh install which still came with kernel 3.2.0-16 the
update to 3.20-17 didn't pass like expected

The 3 files (symlinks!) vmlinux, initr.img and initrd.img.old were put
on the mount level ( / ) and not into /boot where they should be to
point to the newer kernel. I've to do that by hand. Frankly, in Debian
that problem never happened. (I'll post this to the ppc tester needed
thread in ubuntuforums as well).
