Testing ISOs by converting directly to USB stick

It would be very convenient to be able to make bootable USB sticks by
using dd to copy the CD image.  The current images don't seem to work
that way.  Is it / would it be possible to create bootable USB sticks
from ISO images simply by transferring using dd?

It would be easier to work with multiple architectures that way.
