I would recommend trying Lubuntu 12.04 Powerpc.

I use USB drives for my iso testing on my G4 PowerBook. I build my
isos on the USBs on a PC laptop because that is where all my isos are
stored. The dd command work well for building the iso correctly then
the trick is to get the USB to boot through open firmware. You might
give that a try, knowing Lubuntu runs under 200 Mib using much less
resources than most other flavors.
