1) On ppc there is no vmlinu*Z* but vmlinu*X* (at least in my system)

2) The problem are not the *.old files. As you correctly quote,
they're needed in case the system does not boot into the standard
linux version (as far as i understand) and you're offered to use asn
older version (during the startup process).

3) The problem is, the symlink files are not in the place where they
should be and the rights for the related "real" files are not correct.
